PayPal recently indicated that it will no longer pursue near-field communications technology for point-of-sale mobile payments. Instead, it will look at other avenues for allowing its customers to make payments from their mobile phones.
“By the time NFC catches up, we’ll be in a world that will move away from the point-of-sales terminal,” said David Marcus, PayPal’s VP of mobile. conducted NFC trials, but in the end concluded that retail outlets aren’t equipped properly for NFC. Instead, PayPal will use a phone number and pin code combination to allow customers to access their PayPal accounts to fund mobile payments.
