Computer chipmaker AMD will turn to Cyclos Semiconductor for its resonant clock mesh technology in its upcoming Piledriver-based chips. They will replace the Bulldozer-core chips introduced in the fall of 2011. The new technology will reduce the chip’s clock distribution power.
The technology will reduce distribution power by as much as 24 percent, while maintaining previous clock-skew targets, Cyclos stated. ARM and Siemens have invested in Cyclos, though AMD is the first major licensee of the tech.
Cyclos also confirmed the Piledriver chips will be built on the 32nm process and have clock speeds of at least 4GHz. The Piledriver cores are expected to launch later this year.
