Verizon Wireless said that for the rest of 2012, all the smartphones it announces will include LTE 4G support. Verizon is hoping to convince more customers to switch to LTE devices, and said that only 5% of its customer base is using LTE devices at the moment.

It is offering double the data to LTE 4G smartphone customers in a current promotion. Verizon also hopes to double the number of markets covered by LTE before the end of 2012. “By the end of the year, our plan is to be in at least 400 markets across the country,” said Verizon Wireless CTO David Small in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. Verizon’s current LTE footprint is about 200 markets.

By 2013, Verizon Wireless said it will cover 260 million Americans with 4G LTE, an estimate that is 10 million higher than Verizon’s previous projections.
