Indian carrier is now selling the iPhone 3GS for less than $200, according to an official announcement. The device is now selling for about Rs. 9,999, or roughly $181. Buyers must also, however, pay for a year of unlimited data at a rate of Rs. 3,000, the equivalent of just under $55. The 3GS has been available in India for a long time, but typically at much higher prices.
Bringing the iPhone’s price down may be essential in India, since as a rule a far smaller proportion of the country is able to afford smartphones versus markets like the US. Apple faces a particular threat from Android phones, which cost closer to $100 at the lower end.
