Canon has confirmed it will be releasing a new firmware for its in the future. The biggest update for the camera will be in allowing videographers to record uncompressed high-definition video from the HDMI port to an external recording device. The uncompressed YcbCr 4:2:2, 8-bit output will allow users to edit the resulting footage with as minimal degredation as possible.
The HDMI feed can also be displayed on an external monitor, letting filmmakers view the live video feed without resorting to watching the LCD on the back of the DSLR, making it more useful to larger productions. Also included in the firmware update are changes to the 5D Mark III’s autofocus. The new firmware will support AF using the camera’s central cross-type points, as well as a new maximum aperture of f/8, an increase from its previous maximum of f/5.6.
The firmware update will be free to customers, though it will not be released until April next year. It will be downloadable via the company’s support site, as well as through the customer’s nearest Factory Service Center.
