AV accessory maker Gefen has created a solution for integrating video systems using displays with different native resolutions by introducing the Toolbox HD 1080p Scaler, a breakout box that automatically scales up or down any high-definition signal to the exact maximum resolution of the connected display. The unit bypasses the built-in scalers found in monitors, HDTVs and other equipment that often do an inferior job of conversion, and avoids having to scale all video displays to the lowest-common-denominator resolution for multiple video displays.
As an example, a home-entertainment setup might be able to output to both a 720p projector and a 1080p display. The normal solution would be to set both devices to 720p, but using the Toolbox scaler on the projector, each device can be set for its maximum resolution and receive the highest-quality signal from the source.
The unit features three switchable digital audio inputs and outputs, supporting HDMI, optical and coax devices. It also features RS-232 and IR support for remotes or wired control mechanisms. Video resolutions are scaled up or down automatically to any size or type of display using HDMI. The unit is wall-mountable and thus can be hidden behind displays. It also supports other HDMI features, including Deep Color, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio and Lip Sync.
The Toolbox HD 1080p Scaler is available in either black or white, and sells for $329. It includes an IR remote and a six-foot HDMI cable.
