PSP Has 6.39 Firmware Update, PlayStation Store Not Due Tuesday

Sony on Tuesday announced it will soon release a system software update for the PSP system, which is effectively the equivalent of the PS3 3.61 update. It will guide users through the process of changing their PSN password and also improve system stability in specific cases. The update is required to get back on the PSN after the hack that took the gaming network offline for more than three weeks.

At the same time, Sony said the PSN is undergoing maintenance today and will be offline until about 5PM Pacific. Users will not have access to registration and Account Management, including password resets. Most users will have the ability to game online, however, and access external sites that require PSN authentication.

It’s unknown if the maintenance has any relation to the hacks or if it’s in preparation for unveilings at E3 in early June.

Sony also points out that the PlayStation Store will not be back up online today, despite rumors, and is again committing to an end of May goal for its reinstatement. A relaunch could happen earlier but hasn’t been narrowed down.
