The Acer TravelMate P645 ultrabook is getting an update. The newest models, the S-Series, are available now, and the increased performance in the P645-S models should give power users more speed without sacrificing battery life or the compact size.
The TravelMate P645-S series ultrabooks are available in two configurations, with the premium configuration meeting the high-end needs of travel computing, and the budget configuration giving slightly lower performance.
Hardware In The P645-S
The processor is one of the key areas of improvement in the S-Series, with options for 5th generation Intel Core i5-5200U and Core i7-5500U processors upgrading the i5-4200U used in the M-Series.
There are updates to the graphics hardware, as well. The premium configuration features the Nvidia GeForce 840M, while the base model uses integrated Intel HD Graphics 5500. The screen size has not changed; it’s still a 14″ screen, but Acer gave the display itself a boost in the premium model with the upgrade to an IPS LED display.
Both models include 8 GB of DDR3 RAM and a 256 GB SSD. Each also includes a backlit keyboard and a 720p webcam.
Security enhancements on the P645-S include fingerprint readers and Intel vPro Active Management Technology for remote hardware and software management.
Software In The P645-S
Being geared towards travelers, Acer included several security software packages with the TravelMate P645-S, including Acer ProShield Manager and Acer Office Manager.
ProShield Manager protects the ultrabook by using a suite of tools designed to enhance security by securing the BIOS and creating encrypted sections of the hard drive. Office Manager offers larger-scale controls, allowing an organization to deploy security policies and perform maintenance tasks.
Connectivity In The P645-S
The P645-S has two USB 3.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. It supports outputting displays on up to two additional devices, and it has connectors for HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort and VGA.
The Acer TravelMate P645-S series ultrabooks will be available with Windows 7, Windows 8 64-bit, Windows 8 Pro 64-bit and Windows 8.1. They are available now, with prices starting at $949.99.
