Alexander Skarsgård has been cast as the male lead in the upcoming BBC One-AMC series The Little Drummer Girl, the networks announced Tuesday.

Based on the novel of the same name by John le Carré, the six-part miniseries follows brilliant young actress Charlie (Florence Pugh) who strikes up an acquaintance with an intriguing stranger while on holiday in Greece, but it rapidly becomes apparent that his intentions are far from romantic. The man is Becker (Skarsgård), an Israeli intelligence officer, who entangles her in a complex and high stakes plot which unfolds as she takes on the role of a lifetime in the ‘theatre of the real’.

Skarsgård recently won an Emmy for his role in the acclaimed HBO limited series Big Little Lies. He is also known for his roles in the film The Legend of Tarzan and HBO’s True Blood. He will next be seen starring in Duncan Jones’ Mute opposite Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux, and The Aftermath, starring opposite Keira Knightley.

The series will be produced by AMC, BBC One, and The Ink Factory. Park Chan-wook, the writer and director of films like Old Boy and The Handmaiden, will direct the series, marking his television debut. It is set to go into production in 2018.
