Google CEO Larry Page today announced that Andy Rubin, who has spearheaded the development of Android since 2004, is leaving his position in charge of Android for another role within Google.
Moving forward, Sundar Pichai will lead Android development for Google. Pichai comes from Google’s Chrome and Apps team. Page expressed gratitude to Rubin for all his work helping Android grow from a small project to the massive ecosystem it is today, and threw his support behind Pichai and what he will bring to the Android operating system in the future.
“While Andy’s a really hard act to follow, I know Sundar will do a tremendous job doubling down on Android as we work to push the ecosystem forward.” Page did not specify what new role Rubin will take.
