Rovio’s Angry Birds Space has over 10 million downloads across mobile and desktop versions. The company didn’t give a breakdown of which versions were most popular.
Space is considered by many to be more of a sequel to the original Angry Birds as it introduces genuinely new game mechanics rather than primarily adding new levels, as with Seasons. The difference may have been key to boosting early adoption. Rovio also helped its chances through heavy promotion, which among other tactics included dressing Seattle’s Space Needle as one of the game’s distinctive bird slingshots.
The series is consistently one of the most popular apps on any platform and, similar to Doom, is now considered virtually mandatory by some. HP, Microsoft, and RIM all went to extraordinary lengths to get Angry Birds ports on their platforms, and even Google used a web-based port as a centerpiece of its Chrome Web Store launch.
