Apple has hired Jonathan Cohen for an unnamed project away from Nvidia. Cohen was the director of Nvidia’s Software Solutions machine learning program, and the hire is sparking rumors about the future of the hypothesized Apple Car and other artificial intelligence programs at Cupertino.
The hire was first spotted on LinkedIn by Re/Code. The engineer was known to be on Nvidia’s autonomous driving program. He founded Nvidia’s deep learning group in 2008. Prior to his tenure at Nvidia, he supervised the “Sandman” character’s rendering software for Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man 3. Cohen is a graduate of Brown University’s computer science program.
Co-founder of deep learning company Skymind Chris Nicholson said of the hire that “This is a big hire for Apple. Nvidia’s GPUs are being used to power auto-pilot systems in cars, so the implications are pretty clear.”
