Apple Shares to the Public Open-Source Kernels for iOS, MacOS

Apple has made available versions of its iOS 11 and macOS 10.13 kernels through GitHub.

The kernels are both compatible with ARM-based mobile chips, but are far from complete operating systems. The kernel is the core source code for iOS and macOS, and doesn’t include the user interface or application framework, which means anyone interested in developing on the kernel would have to create most of the operating system on their own.

Apple has typically made the macOS kernel available with each major build, though it hasn’t offered the iOS kernel as often. The fact that both kernels compatible with ARM chips is a curiosity.

Developers can download the core platform code from GitHub under fairly strict licensing terms.
