Apple was found guilty of infringing on three patents held by a company called Smartflash and must pay the firm $532.9 million.
A federal jury in Texas reached the verdict Tuesday and said Apple violated the patents willfully. According to Smartflash, Apple’s iTunes software uses its patented technology for storing and retrieving music, movies, and games. Apple was disappointed with the verdict and railed against Smartflash, which is a patent holding firm.
“We refused to pay off this company for the ideas our employees spent years innovating and unfortunately we have been left with no choice but to take this fight up through the court system,” said Apple in a statement provided to Reuters.
Smartflash has filed similar lawsuits against Google, HTC, and Samsung.
