Barnes and Noble is creating its own downloadable video store. Nook Video will allow users to buy movies and TV shows, and watch them on TVs and smartphones, as well as other handhelds such as the Nook Tablet. The move brings it in line with competitor Amazon’s own Instant Video offering, complete with soon-to-launch free Nook Video apps.
The service will include content from HBO, Sony, Starz, Viacom, Warner Bros, and Disney, and have options to download videos to watch offline or to stream them from the Nook Cloud. UltraViolet accounts can also be linked, allowing previous UltraViolet purchases and qualifying DVD and Blu-ray discs to be added to the Nook Video collection, to be viewed later.
Nook Video will be arriving in the US in the fall, with a later release for the UK in the “holiday period.”
