The BBC hasĀ committed to broadcasting some of the London 2012 Olympics Games in 3D. Events to be aired in 3D include the Olympic Opening Ceremony, the closing ceremony, the men’s 100m final, and the nightly highlights program, among others.
The coverage is said to be a continuation of the company’s 3D trials, which included the 2011 Wimbledon tennis championships, according to a Pocket-lint report. Viewers recently had a chance to watch Strictly Come Dancing in 3D.
The 3D content will be broadcast on BBC HD Channel, while HD content will be simulcast on BBC HD and HHC One HD. Users who do not have a 3D television will not be able to watch the 3D programs in HD resolution on the HD channel, however.
“We’ve chosen these events partly because they mark the pinnacles of the Games but also to minimise the loss of HD that is a consequence of our 3D service,” said BBC director Roger Mosey.
