This week’s news that French-Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Enemy) has cast the female leads for his next two films, Sicario and Story of Your Life–Emily Blunt and Amy Adams, respectively–may have had some wondering which movie might happen first.
Now word comes from Variety that Benicio Del Toro is in talks to co-star with Blunt in the crime-thriller Sicario (which literally means “hitman” in Spanish), making one think that film might go into production first. Written by TV actor Taylor Sheridan (“Sons of Anarchy”), the movie is about an Arizona police officer who travels to Mexico with a pair of mercenaries to track down a drug lord.
The story doesn’t make clear which character Del Toro might play in Villeneuve’s film, although he will be seen playing a very famous drug lord, Colombia’s Pablo Escobar, in the upcoming Paradise Lost, as well as appearing in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy and Paul Thomas Anderson’s new movie Inherent Vice later this year.
Sicario will be produced by Basil Iwanyk, Thad and Trent Luckinbill and Molly Smith through their Black Label Media banner, and Edward McDonnell.
