The Internet is abuzz with word today that Gearbox Software is prepping a sequel to Borderlands for a 2012 release. While the game has yet to be officially confirmed by the developer, the anonymously sourced news comes from Eurogamer.
The sequel is reportedly coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC sometime next year. Gearbox has expressed its intent in the past to return to the first-person shooter/role-playing game hybrid series, but those are just empty promises in the absence of any official word. Publisher 2K Games has yet to comment on the news, and probably won’t until there’s something real to comment on.
The first game was very successful, with the initial release followed by a string of DLC add-ons that brought hours of additional play to the game. The core play was a hit on its own too, with support for four-player co-op through the entire campaign and all subsequent DLC releases.
