Less than a week after receiving his first Oscar nomination for David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook, actor Bradley Cooper is in the mix to headline the period spy thriller Dark Invasion for Warner Bros., based on Howard Blum’s upcoming book about the infiltration of the United States by German spies in 1915. The book will be released this year on September 11.
According to Deadline, Warners paid six figures to get the rights to Blum’s book as a vehicle for Cooper, who will co-produce the film with John Lesher and Adam Kassan for Le Grisbi.
Blum’s novel explores the various ways that the Kaiser and his Secret Service tried to prevent America from entering World War I to help the Allies using a variety of means including sabotaging ships, bombing factories and the U.S. Capitol Building. Cooper will play the New York police captain Tom Tunney who puts together the team to put a stop to the German spy activities, making him akin to the first head of homeland security.
