Canon has unveiled a new PowerShot compact camera with a large zoom and resolution. The PowerShot G3 X packs a one-inch, 20.2-megapixel CMOS sensor with a DIGIC 6 image processor into a dust and water-resistant case, while on the front is an f/2.8-5.6, 25x optical power zoom lens, the equivalent of 24-600mm lens, which also benefits from an improved five-axis Intelligent Image Stabilization system for clearer images.
Offering an ISO range of 125-12,800, the G3 X includes controls and menus imported from the EOS DSLR line, with it having manual and automatic exposure controls, AF selection and drive buttons, and the option to shoot in RAW, Jpeg, or both formats. Continuous shooting can be performed at up to 5.9fps, with a high-speed AF with 31 AF points, while for video, it can record 1080p footage in MP4 at 24, 30, and 60fps.
A programmable continuous ring on the lens can be used to quickly adjust the camera, with an exposure compensation dial and mode dials on the top, and an extra rear control dial. On the back is a 3.2-inch 1620k-dot-resolution multi-angle touchscreen, though a 2.36MP electronic viewfinder is also available as an optional viewing accessory, while its Wi-Fi connectivity lets a smartphone remotely operate it, as well as to access images and videos for sharing to social networks.
Shipping in July in the United States, the Canon PowerShot G3 X will cost $1,000.
