When we last saw Castle and Beckett, way back in December the has spent their autumn surviving the aftermath of a failed wedding and Beckett (Stana Katic) and the rest of the police searching for a kidnapped Castle (Nathan Fillion). The ABC series picks up again with Castle and Beckett now successfully married, but the police largely trying to forget about the writer after his ties with the mafia got a suspect killed in the midseason finale, leaving him banned from working with the force.
With Castle’s future uncertain, what’s coming in the second half of season 7 for him and Beckett? Since it might be awhile before Castle can get back in the police force’s good graces. He decides that he needs a different plan and gets a new job. Due to his inability to resist finding a way to solve cases, Castle figures out the the next best thing is to start working as a private investigator.
In the midseason premiere, debuting Monday, Castle will get hired by someone to work the same case Beckett is on for the police. Of course, the show would find a way to get them both together again, but how will they handle the fact that “Castle” is disallowed from working with his new wife?
The couple ends up pusuing their investigations in parallel, with each getting a chance to “one up’ the other. Of course it’s Castle’s first case as a newly licensed PI, so it’s not all smooth sailing. Beckett and company back at the station, figure that out detecting Castle will be a cinch, but it turns out that each may need the other more than they expect.
As for other pairings, what about Esposito (Jon Huertas) and Lanie (Tamala Jones)? Things were looking up for the on-again, off-again couple, as they appeared to be engaged only a couple episodes after that subway hostage crisis forced them to reconsider their feelings for each other. However, in the midseason finale the couple decided to just be friends. This seems to be a good move for the show, to keep them free and shake things up a bit.
How will Castle handle his ban from the police force? How long will the ban last? Watch and see as the midseason premiere of “Castle” airs Jan. 12 at 10 p.m. EST/PST on ABC.
