Here is the first trailer for John McCain: For Whom the Bell Tolls, a timely HBO Documentary Films project titled after the maverick GOP senator’s favorite book. Here is HBO’s logline: An illuminating, exclusive profile of one of the most influential forces in modern American politics. This sweeping account combines the senator’s own voice, culled from original interviews, commentary and speeches, with archival newsreel and television footage and previously unseen home movies and photographs. The film also features interviews with family, friends, colleagues and leading political figures.
Among that last group is Bill Clinton, who encapsulates the man and his work: “McCain was always able to break the mold he was in if it was clearly the right thing to do. And that’s an invaluable commodity.” George W. Bush also weighs in, as does McCain’s 2008 presidential opponent, Barack Obama. But listen to the words from McCain himself, an octogenarian with a lifetime of accomplishment and earned respect. Key line: “We need to give the American people what they deserve — and right now, they’re not getting it.” Lately, some would argue that goes for McCain, too.
Produced and directed by Peter, George and Teddy Kunhardt, John McCain: For Whom the Bell Tolls premieres, appropriately, on Memorial Day, May 28, on HBO.
