Comcast CEO Mike Angelaka emphatically denied that his company had any plans to move to a metered or usage-based billing model. “Be clear, we’re not adopting it,” he told attendees at the Barclays Capital conference this week. This is despite the fact that the company already has the means in place to measure usage if it so chooses.
Angelaka’s comments probably come in response to AT&T’s recent admission that it has started capping DSL subscribers’ aggregated downloads at 150GB per month and U-verse VDSL users’ downloads to 250GB per month. Additionally, AT&T will begin charging an overage fee of $10 per 50GB of excessive downloading after the subscriber has exceeded the cap three times during their lifetime as an AT&T customer.
Comcast’s current Internet offerings are based on bandwidth speed and not utilization. Its plans range from download speeds of 15 Mbps up to 105 Mbps. Comcast does have a maximum 250GB per month cap on all its service levels.
