Comixology has updated its self-titled Android app to version 3.0, finally matching the iOS update from August and providing a new, consistent user experience across both platforms. The new version brings a complete redesign of the app, upgrades the speed of launching and most operations, and improves the ability of users to discover new comics they might enjoy. The app features comics and graphic novels from over 5,000 creators.
New in this version is a “Purchases” tab that lets users quickly find or re-download any comics they’ve previously bought, and the new consistency allows users with both iOS and Android devices to access the same material. The new interface reduces the amount of information that needs to be loaded on startup, and enhances overall stability and usability.
Comixology also now features more ways for users to discover additional comics, including a “genre” listing, searches by artist or author, improved feature spotlights, more categories for new content and series or storyline listings. For iOS users (who are currently on v3.1), the current version also supports CMX-HD files, comics where the resolution has been doubled to take advantage of the Retina Display screen on the new iPad.
Upgrading purchased comics to CMX-HD format is available at no additional charge for previous content and no extra cost for new content. When Android tablet screens improve, the CMX-HD format may become available to those users as well.
In addition, version 3 for Android adds features such as background downloading, an improved “Instant Search” and the ability to buy and continue reading the next issue (if available) at the end of each comic. The app itself is free of charge and requires Android 2.1 or higher. There is a separate version available for the Kindle Fire.
