American Express is increasing its involvement with Apple Pay by making more of its credit cards work with the service, just as teased earlier this month by Apple. The credit card company revealed earlier today that its corporate cards in the United States will support the mobile payments service from now on, potentially allowing business users and corporate customers to make use of Apple Pay when carrying out transactions using the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and Apple Watch.
Just as with the existing support for consumer cards and OPEN Small Business cards last year, AmEx corporate users will be able to benefit from being able to perform transactions without presenting their physical card. This also adds extra security to the card, since Apple Pay uses a tokenized system instead of transmitting the actual card details.
Corporate cards added to the Apple Pay roster include the American Express Corporate Green Card, Gold Card, Platinum Card, Centurion Card, Business Extra Corporate Card, and Corporate Defined Expense Program Corporate Cards. Prepaid AmEx cards are not eligible for use with Apple Pay.
The addition of AmEx corporate cards is the latest in many changes happening to Apple Pay in recent weeks. Last week, Apple announced an extra 43 banks and credit unions in the United States had signed up to Apple Pay, with its recent UK launch also gaining support from more financial institutions. Despite the good news, a study recently suggested that the growth of Apple Pay use is declining, in part caused by a lack of rapid uptake by businesses.
