A romantic comedy TV series adaptation of Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel High Fidelity and its Stephen Frears-directed 2000 film version is in early development for Disney’s upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service.

The new take is said to be a gender-swapped take on the classic title that will make some major departures from the source material, but still captures the same tone. In this version, the story centers on a record store owner who will break the fourth wall and talk directly to the audience about past relationships.

The new take will also be PG-13 and intended for family co-viewing, as opposed to the John Cusack and Jack Black film which was an R-rated release. Bull and Ugly Betty scribes Veronica West and Sarah Kucserka will pen the project for Midnight Radio and ABC Signature Studios with Scott Rosenberg, Jeff Pinkner, Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec to produce.
