Disney’s Maleficent is expected to cross $600 million at the global box office today in its fifth week of release, said the studio. This is the second Walt Disney Studios release of 2014 to surpass this threshold and the studio’s 20th release ever to do so.
Released in the US/Canada on May 30, Maleficent opened at #1 with $69.4 million and has seen strong week-to-week holds, remaining in the top five since opening and tallying $205 million through July 1.
It is the fourth-highest grossing film of the year and Angelina Jolie’s highest grossing live-action film of all time domestically, internationally and globally. Worldwide it is the highest grossing original film of 2014.
Maleficent is expected to surpass $400 million internationally just ahead of its July 5 debut in Japan, its final international market.
The three films ahead of Maleficent worldwide for the year at the moment include X-Men: Days of Future Past ($713.9 million), Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($711.2 million) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($703.7 million).
