Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios‘ Doctor Strange dominated the domestic box office this weekend, earning an estimated $85 million from 3,882 theaters, an average of $21,893. This is the 14th consecutive #1 debut for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (out of 14 films) and the debut tops the openings of Thor ($65.7 million), Captain America: The First Avenger ($65.1 million) and Ant-Man ($57.2 million), and is close to Thor: The Dark World‘s $85.7 million.
Doctor Strange also opened in an additional 22 material countries this weekend with an estimated $118.7 million, bringing the film’s international total to $240.4 million and its global sum to $325.4 million after 13 days. Here are the key international markets so far:

Doctor Strange earned $24.2 million globally from 1,001 IMAX screens in 66 markets this weekend, marking the biggest November IMAX release ever. Domestically, the movie earned $12.2 million from 380 IMAX locations, a $32.1K per-screen average. The global IMAX total for Doctor Strange, including last weekend’s opening results, has reached $35 million.
With the global weekend driven by Doctor Strange, The Walt Disney Studios has surpassed the $6 billion mark at the global box office ($6.070 billion to date). This is the first time Disney has achieved this milestone and only the second time in industry history. Disney earlier this week surpassed its own previous global box office record of $5.843 billion set in 2015.
Made for $165 million and receiving an A CinemaScore, Doctor Strange was directed by Scott Derrickson and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg, Benjamin Bratt, Scott Adkins, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton.
In second place domestically, DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox’s Trolls earned an estimated $45.6 million from 4,060 theaters, an average of $11,232. Internationally, Trolls added $30 million from 67 markets and has now earned $104 million overseas. The animated comedy features the voices of Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Russell Brand, Zooey Deschanel, Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, James Corden, Kunal Nayyar, Ron Funches, Icona Pop, Quvenzhané Wallis, John Cleese and Gwen Stefani. Trolls received an A CinemaScore and cost $125 million to make.
Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge (Lionsgate) debuted in the third spot with an estimated $14.8 million at 2,886 theaters, an average of $5,111. The action drama, which also received an A CinemaScore, stars Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths and Vince Vaughn. The film cost $40 million to produce.
After reigning for two weeks, Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween (Lionsgate) dropped down to fourth place but still added $7.8 million and is now up to $64.9 million after three weeks. The comedy, which was made for just $20 million, co-stars Bella Thorne, Cassi Davis, Patrice Lovely, Andre Hall, Yousef Erakat, Lexy Panterra, Diamond White, Liza Koshy, Brock O’Hurn, Jimmy Tatro, JC Caylen, Kian Lawley and Mike Tornabene.
Rounding out the top five in North America, Columbia Pictures’ Inferno grossed $6.3 million its second weekend and has earned $26 million so far. Directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks and Felicity Jones, the $75 million adaptation of the Dan Brown book is approaching an estimated $180 million worldwide.
