Connected Data, creators of the Drobo range of storage appliances, has launched a version of its most portable device with built-in storage. The Drobo Mini, first revealed two years ago, will include four SSD drives pre-installed into its four 2.5-inch drive bays, giving users such as photographers and film makers a fast storage option without needing to buy drives separately.
Just as before, the Drobo Mini includes two Thunderbolt ports and USB 3.0 connectivity, with an optional extra mSATA connection able to provide even faster transfer speeds and caching facilities. In testing, the company claims read speeds of over 300MB per second and over 225MB per second for writing. In terms of data protection, if a drive fails, the data can be restored to a replacement drive shortly after it is inserted, while an onboard battery will help prevent the loss of data in memory or cache if power is suddenly cut.
