Facebook Launches VoIP Services in the iOS Messenger App in UK

Facebook has enabled Voice Over IP (VoIP) in its messaging app for users in the United Kingdom, and possibly other areas of Europe. After being launched in Canada in January before rolling out to the United States, the iOS version of Facebook Messenger allows users to call each other through the service instead of passing voice messages to each other as previously offered.

While the update is live for some users in the UK, the VoIP update does not extend to the Android version of the app. Users in Canada were only able to get VoIP through the Android app two months after the iOS edition became available to download. It is unlikely for there to be a similar length of delay before the Android variant gains the feature.

Users wishing to use the VoIP feature must start a conversation with another user, press the “i” button, and then tap “Free Call.”
