Facebook Messenger Now Has Group Payments

Facebook today made it possible to pay groups of people within Messenger.

The app has supporter peer-to-peer payments since 2015, but they were limited to single people. The latest version of Messenger makes is possible to send funds to a group of people. Facebook suggests the tool will be helpful when groups need to split a restaurant check or share the costs of gifts.

The tool, found under the “more features” menu, makes it possible to pay an entire group or just several members of a group. Payments can be spread out evenly, or customized based on the situation at hand. The function even supports annotations, allowing users to tag the payment so they know why it was made. Messenger users will need to have a debit card associated with their account to send money.

The new Messenger for Android is rolling out over the next few days. Facebook didn’t say when group payments will reach the iOS version of Messenger. Group payments are only available in the U.S. for now.
