The FCC and FTC have signed signed a Memorandum of Understanding that defines how the two agencies will work together moving forward. The FCC and FTC have relied on a MOU from 2003 to coordinate on investigations and consumer protection actions.
“The [new] memorandum outlines methods by which the agencies will coordinate and share information and recognizes the agencies’ expertise in their respective jurisdictions,” said the FCC. “In addition, the memorandum recognizes the two agencies’ complementary authorities with regard to practices by common carriers.”
The agencies recognize that many of their investigations overlap. They’ve agreed to coordinate agency initiatives and consult with one another on active investigations. This includes sharing intelligence, investigative techniques, legal expertise, consumer complaint data, and best practices.
The agencies appointed official liaison officers who are responsible for coordinating efforts between the FCC and FTC. The FCC oversees the telecommunications sector, while the FTC oversees the broader practices of all businesses as they relate to U.S. consumers.
