Production is already underway for Sony Pictures‘ upcoming Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower and some new photos from the set have made their way online via The Daily Mail that offer our first look at Idris Elba as Roland Deschain, aka The Gunslinger! .
Elba is joined by Matthew McConaughey as Randall Flagg (The Man in Black) in the film, along with Abbey Lee as the film’s female lead, Tirana, Tom Taylor as young Jake Chambers, Fran Kranz as Pimli, the right hand man of Flagg, and Vikings star Katheryn Winnick in a mystery role.
Director Nikolaj Arcel, who co-wrote the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and directed the Academy Award-nominated A Royal Affair, is set to helm the big screen adaptation, set up through Sony Pictures and MRC. Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) have written the screenplay.
“[The movie] starts in media res, in the middle of the story instead of at the beginning,” King previously said of the film. “Which may upset some of the fans a little bit, but they’ll get behind it, because it is the story.”
The Dark Tower is currently scheduled to debut February 17, 2017.
