Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel leads the cover of the new issue of Entertainment Weekly with both the first official publicity shot of the actress in character along with an exclusive first look featurette about her Air-Force-pilot-turned-intergalactic-hero.
Set in the 1990s, the project marks the twenty-first MCU film overall and will be the first to star a solo female superhero. The film reportedly sidesteps the traditional origin story, starting with Carol already having her powers and having left her earthly life behind to join an elite Kree military team called Starforce led by an enigmatic commander (Jude Law).
Carol however soon finds herself back on Earth with new questions about her past. Ben Mendelsohn plays Talos, who spearheads an invasion of Earth by the shape-shifting Skrulls.
Describing her character, Larson says:
“She can’t help but be herself. She can be aggressive, and she can have a temper, and she can be a little invasive and in your face. She’s also quick to jump to things, which makes her amazing in battle because she’s the first one out there and doesn’t always wait for orders. But the [not] waiting for orders is, to some, a character flaw.”
Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck helm.
