Atari made a great showing at E3 2011, one of the games they featured at the booth was a new MMO called Tera Online. I got a chance to spend some time with it and thought that overall it was interesting and innovative.
Tera is best described as an “action MMO” meaning that you get all the depth of play found in other MMO’s, but with the added bonus of being able to fully control your character in combat. Instead of just point and click fighting, skill, position, timing and aim all play a part in determining your combat success.
Developed by Bluehole Studio, Tera is built on the Unreal Engine 3. This provides a world with great landscaping and features. You have the choice of controlling your character with either mouse and keyboard or a PC game controller. During my demo, I used the mouse and keyboard. I found the control to be smooth and pretty intuitive even though that isn’t normally my preferred method of game control.
One of Tera’s best features is that it is an open world, mean that “if you can see it, you can go to it”. You get to choose from seven different races and eight different classes to make you character unique. There lots of different quests in over 80 zones of play with more monsters that I knew what to do with.
Another interesting part of Tera is that because of the social, political and economic structures of the game, players at all levels can have an impact on the community. This encourages people to remain active and engaged.
Overall Tera is a great game visually, and has a lot of interesting features, we look forward to seeing more of it as it matures.
