Flipboard Gains The New Yorker

Flipboard, the popular digest-style feed reader for the iPad, has added the prestigious magazine The New Yorker to its list of publishers. Partial and complete articles, a selection of cartoon and images and other highlights from the full print or digital edition — the latter of which is available in full as its own app on the App Store — are available to Flipboard readers by simply adding the magazine to their section list. The articles are specially re-formatted for viewing through Flipboard, but contain much of the same content found on the magazine’s web site.

The New Yorker is likely to be one of the oldest ongoing publications among Flipboard’s featured feeds, having begun in 1925 and been published continuously ever since. The magazine, which has won more National Magazine Awards than any other publication, is well-regarded for its attention to fiction, topical illustrated front covers, literary and journalistic depth, rigorous fact-checking and copy-editing, interest in American popular culture both within and outside of New York City, and it’s famous array of single-panel cartoons.

The publication is also offering its own free reader app, through which customers can subscribe to full issues featuring the full content of the print edition along with supplementary material. Print subscribers receive the digital editions free, but digital-only subscriptions are slightly discounted from the print versions at $5 per issue, $6 for a month’s worth (usually four issues) or $60 for a full year (47 issues).

The Flipboard feed should provide a fluid, easy-to-read sampler of each issue to interest people new to the magazine or more casual readers an opportunity to engage with the magazine to judge whether they want to subscribe. Flipboard itself is free, and features a number of feeds from prominent magazines, web sites and bloggers which it re-formats into a customizable digest.
