caligula-The game Japanese developer FuRyu was teasing last week has been revealed, according to Famitsu. The game is a PS Vita RPG dubbed simply Caligula. The game takes place in a virtual reality world named “Mobius,” where all humans repeat their highschool years together. In this trapped state, the students have to repeat the life of a highschooler for three years.

Despite most people having no recollection of their real lives, the protagonist realizes this is not the real world, and looks for a way to return to reality. There will be people attempting to prevent your escape back to reality, as they would rather stay in Mobius.

The key themes of the game are said to be modern pathology and trauma, set within a highschool environment, with a focus on the “caligula effect.” There even seems to be vocaloid characters in the game.

Key staff working on the game include Tadashi Satomi on scenario writing (who worked on both Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 games), Tsukasa Masuko on sound work, and development of the game is being handled by studio Aquila (they’ve worked on Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment).

Caligula will launch on June 23rd in Japan.
