Ever wonder what the first-person, role-playing epic Borderlands might look like had it launched in 1989?
Gearbox Software is offering a glimpse with a “demake” called The Border Lands, a 16-bit version playable on PCs.
Players use the arrow keys to move and the spacebar to fire, holding down to aim at targets. Watching from a top-down view, players kill skags, bandits and all other sorts of baddies as they collect weapons and other loot.
All four of the new mercenaries starring in Borderlands 2, which launches Sept. 21, are available to use in the “demake.”
