Google indicated today via Twitter that its Project Ara modular smartphone project has been delayed until next year.
The project was scheduled to trial its mix-and-match smartphone hardware in Puerto Rico this year, but the company now says it is looking at U.S. sites and won’t get off the ground until some point in 2016.
Google didn’t provide a real reason for the delay, other than to say “lots of iterations, more than we thought.”
The idea would allow people to swap and interchange smartphone modules, such as the display, battery, or camera, rather than replace the entire device.
