Google TV Adoption Appears To Be Very Low

An investigation within Android Market stats has suggested that Google TV adoption may be so low as to be under one million users. The TV and Movies app, a core part of the OS, is listed as having between 500,000 to one million installed users, GigaOM found. More than half of them are Logitech Revue owners, while the rest are Sony’s combined Internet TV and Internet Blu-ray player owners.

Google hasn’t independently confirmed or denied the figures.

Assuming the count represents every user, it could point to very few picking up the platform in roughly a year and a half of its existence. It’s supported by Logitech’s assertions, which saw it cut Revue production early after poor sales made it untenable. Apple, which still considers its Apple TV boxes a “hobby,” shipped 1.4 million just last fall, and 2.8 million in all of 2011.

Google is mostly pinning its hopes on new Google TV devices launching in 2012 from LG, Samsung, Sony, and Vizio, but these won’t be ready until the spring or summer. Predictions by chairman Eric Schmidt that most TVs would be Google TVs by summer are so far unlikely to come true.
