Rockstar Games has announced that a new version of Grand Theft Auto III, the 10 Year Anniversary Edition, will be released for iOS and Android devices on December 15th. The app will cost $5, and run on only a select group of devices due to its graphical demands. On iOS this includes the iPad 1 and 2, the iPhone 4 and 4S, and the fourth-generation iPod touch. Supported Android phones are limited to the HTC Rezound, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy R, and T-Mobile G2x.
Among compatible Android tablets are the Acer Iconia, ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, Sony Tablet S, and Toshiba Thrive.
Rockstar has not revealed many details about the game, except that it will use a number of on-screen buttons to try to mimic the flexibility of PC and console controls. The original game was released in 2001, and saw players rise through the Liberty City underworld by completing missions for themselves and various factions. Like other GTA games before and since III was an open-world title, letting players explore anywhere and cause as much chaos as they liked. The new mobile app should duplicate this gameplay.
