Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy crossed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office yesterday, Walt Disney Pictures has revealed. The film has earned $255.2 million to date domestically and $245.3 million internationally, with several key markets yet to open, including Germany, Italy, Japan and China.
Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel’s 10th release and 10th straight #1 opening, opened on August 1 and set the record for the biggest August domestic opening of all time by earning $94.3 million. This past weekend, the film reclaimed the top spot at the box office in its fourth week of release and became the highest-grossing summer release domestically this year.
This success extends beyond the box office, as the soundtrack for the film, “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix Vol. 1,” spent two straight weeks at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart.
Marvel’s next release is Avengers: Age of Ultron, opening on May 1, 2015.
