Just as previously hinted in Google’s support pages, HBO has updated its app for both Android and iOS, adding the ability to play shows through the Google Chromecast dongle. The updated HBO Go allows for streaming to the Google media player while simultaneously allowing the app to be used for controlling playback.
The appĀ is free and usable by those subscribing to HBO through a television provider. While it is usually included as part of a much larger and costly cable subscription, Comcast is offering to customers a basic Internet service combined with local TV channels and HBO content at a discount. While HBO does not currently offer HBO Go to users directly, the company did reveal earlier this year it was open to allowing access to be added to Internet service packages for an extra $10 to $15 per month.
The new addition strengthens Chromecast as a platform, with HBO Go streaming joining other efforts from Netflix, Hulu, and Pandora.
