Heyday Films and StudioCanal, the co-producers on the upcoming Paddington sequel, are trying to sever ties with the film’s North American distributior – The Weinstein Company.
Heyday and StudioCanal reportedly feel that a movie that caters to children shouldn’t remain associated with the sex harassment allegations against disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.
Bob Weinstein has previously cited Paddington 2 as a big reason why the company’s future isn’t entirely dire and could prove the distributor’s biggest hit in years. The first film grossed $76.3 million domestically.
The producera are still contractually obligated to honor its distribution deal with TWC-Dimension, but has the opportunity to retrieve the rights if TWC goes under.
Should Heyday and StudioCanal succeed in regaining distribution control, both companies will then have to quickly lock in another competing distributor to launch the film in the United States.
