Animated sequel “Hotel Transylvania 2” is tracking for an opening weekend haul in the $45 million range, according to early studio estimates.
The Sony pic, with characters voiced by Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James and Keegan-Michael Key, bows in 3,754 locations. “Hotel” skipped Thursday previews, but early Friday matinee numbers are looking promising. The original “Hotel Transylvania” opened to $42 million in 2012.
Also premiering this weekend is Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro two-hander “The Intern,” which pulled in $650,00 on Thursday night, suggesting the Nancy Meyers-directed comedy will end its opening weekend with a $15-20 million haul. The Warner Bros. pic, opening in 3,305 locations, is targeted at an older audience.
Eli Roth’s horror pic “The Green Inferno” also began previews Thursday night, earning $275,000. The ultra-gory BH Tilt release looks poised to end the weekend with $5 million.
Action-adventure thriller “Everest” is going wide after opening exclusively in Imax and large-format locations to $7 million last weekend. The Universal release, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, will expand to 3,006 screens, setting it up for a three-day total around $15 million.
