HP has debuted a new iPhone app, ePrint service. The app’s main specialty is printing within a networked enterprise environment. In such a case tasks are funneled through HP’s ePrint Enterprise Administrative Server software, which provides extra data security.
The app can also make use of GPS technology to help find ePrint Mobile Locations. These consist of places like hotels, airport lounges and dedicated printshops, to which people can send print jobs remotely. FedEx Office and Hilton Worldwide are named as one pair of supporting chains.
While largely unnecessary, the app can handle more routine print jobs by directing them through AirPrint. This offers no extra security, and any file compatible with AirPrint can usually be printed in another app. ePrint service is a free download from the App Store, but if not using an iPhone requires an iPad 2 or a fourth-generation iPod touch. iOS 4.2 is required to use the free app.
