Intel is reportedly planning to rebrand its Atom chip lineup sometime next year, unnamed sources within the industry have told DigiTimes. The move is said to be in response to sliding sales for Atom chips, a problem that the company appears to be partially blaming on a poor brand image under the current “Atom” name.
The sources suggest the branding will affect the N-, D-, Z- and E-series processors for netbooks, embedded devices and other products. Current chips will keep their Atom designation, however the upcoming Cedar Trail offerings will use the new name.
Intel is expected to launch its first Cedar Trail chips before the end of the year, however end user devices may not arrive until early next year. Although the source seems confident in the rebranding strategy, the precise naming scheme for the new chips remains unclear.
