A combined effort between UBM TechInsights and Anandtech has produced deductions about the new Apple A6 processor found in the iPhone 5. A diffusion image of the processor shows two 32-bit memory channels and three GPU cores, with a 95 square mm die size.
The Samsung-manufactured core uses LPDDR2 memory, and most likely three of the PowerVR SGX 543MP3 cores. The predecessor, the dual-core SGX 543MP2 is in the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and third-generation Apple TV. The quad-core SGX 543MP4 is in the A5X processor found in the latest-generation iPad.
According to analysis by Ars Technica, the extra graphics core, reportedly higher clock speed, and increased memory bandwidth is credited with achieving the promised doubled performance over the A5.
