It has been nearly five years since producer Charles Roven confirmed two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks’ involvement in the ensemble drama project, Triple Frontier, and now another superstar may join the project. Variety is reporting that, while Hanks appears to remain attached, Johnny Depp is in early talks to join the crime thriller. J.C. Chandor, the Academy Award-nominated writer and director behind Margin Call, All Is Lost and, most recently, A Most Violent Year, took over the project last year from Kathryn Bigelow.

Featuring a script by Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty), the ensemble picture is set in the notorious border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil where the Igazu and Parana rivers converge — making “la triple frontera” difficult to monitor and a haven for organized crime.

The report also confirms that another A-list name that has been tied to the project over the years, Will Smith, has now dropped out of Triple Frontier due to a scheduling conflict on Collateral Beauty, which switched directors late last year. Charles Roven and Alex Gartner of Atlas Entertainment are producing the film.

Depp will be seen this year in Kevin Smith’s Sundance premiere Yoga Hosers, as well as Disney’s big budget sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass. He recently completed filming on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
