In 2010 Juan Jose Campanella made a movie called The Secret in Their Eyes and it won the the Oscar for the Foreign Language that year. Since then there has been an English remake in development, written and directed by Billy Ray Breach.
Chiwetel Ejiofor and Gwyneth Paltrow had already been cast in key roles, but Julia Roberts has joined the cast to play one of the female leads.
Ejiofor will play an MI-5 agent (a retired attorney in the original movie) hoping to get closure for an unsolved case and his unreciprocated love for his superior while writing a book. It’s unclear which role Roberts will play except that the part was originally written for a male actor–ruling out her being the love interest?–though it’s reported that Ray rewrote it specifically for the actress as well as moving the setting from Boston to Los Angeles.
IM Global is fully financing the film with Mark Johnson producing and making worldwide distribution deals for the film at TIFF.
